First Lesson

Shall I teach you a spell? This one's easy, but be warned—it may cost you.

Start by holding out your hand. The hand you draw with. The hand you eat with. The hand you'd caress a lover with. Stretch out your hand and think of someone you wish to call to you. Hold them in your mind.

First; picture them as clearly as you can: their face, their laugh, their sighs. Their scent. The way they tuck their hair behind their left ear when they’re nervous. Imagine a thread stretched from that image to you. Take your pinky and wrap that thread around it.

Next; remember your love for them. Love you share, love you had and lost, or love yet to be. Let it grow for a moment. Take that love's thread and wrap it around your ring finger.

Now; the most perilous part. Think about the pain, the anger, or situation—the thing that causes this distance. It's a thread, and an important one. Extend your middle finger, acknowledging the loss and wrap that thread, keeping it secure.

Now; intent. What does your heart want? A second chance for you? For them? Closure at last? To close the distance? Be honest. A heart can be selfish, but it should always be true. Point in the direction you imagine they are. You have that thread already—it's the one that brought you to this moment. Wrap it tightly around your index finger.

Image. Love. Loss. Intention. These are the ingredients. They're ready.

This part requires the greatest care. You've gathered these threads, and you're only one end of them. Close your hand around those threads and pull them gently to your heart.

Whisper your intent.

Hold your hand there.

You'll know when to let go.
